The Ministry of Sound Logo
35 years on
The MoS logo is one of the most powerful and recognisable symbols in British youth culture, serving as a visual icon that moved dance music from an underground movement into a mainstream cultural powerhouse.
Designed in 1991 by artist Chemical X when the London superclub first opened, the iconic logo represents a historic turning point in the UK’s social and musical landscape and was at the heart of The Ministry’s fame and success.
Within a pure design context, the Ministry of Sound logo holds significant importance as a monument to the death of analogue graphic design and the birth of the digital era.
A part of design history
The original artwork was crafted by hand – using skills and techniques no longer employed and long forgotten – right before Apple Macintoshes and Adobe Illustrator completely overhauled the established design industry forever. As the last of its kind, it’s unique place in time elevates the logo from a simple corporate trademark into an important historical artifact of British graphic design.
MoS35
A New Limited Edition Artwork
For the first time since it was designed 35 years ago, the artist behind the legendary MoS identity is recreating the archetypal artwork as close to the original as possible.
To mark the occasion, a limited edition of 35 artworks and 5 artist’s proofs will be handmade by Chemical X using elements copied directly from the original artwork. The logo will be rebuilt by its creator utilising the exact same physical processes used thirty five years ago.
Each artwork will be stamped, numbered and signed by Chemical X and mounted encased in a solid black wood frame glazed with art glass.
