Back in 1991 Chemical X was approached to initially produce a visualisation of a club that was under construction in an unfashionable part of South London. Instead, he suggested he design the logo.

Working with the DJ Justin Berkmann, who was responsible for the whole concept of the club – inspired by his time in New York playing in the legendary Paradise Garage – the logo took its own inspiration from the emblem for the UK’s House of Commons.

35 years later, the club (and record label) are still going strong and the current logo is practically unchanged – unheard of in the ever changing world of youth culture. It could justifiably be described as an icon.

Background:

The original artwork represents one of the very last logos constructed the way they had been made for decades – camera ready artwork – now lost to the digital age. Chemical X, designed Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto logo just six months later using a computer, as all logos would be from then on. For most of the 90’s, and until it was turned into a vector file, if you saw the MoS logo anywhere, it was a direct copy of this artwork.
